The State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces was established in the late 80’s following a national initiative and was officially open in 1990. The Laboratory was ranked in the highest category (Grade ‘A’ Laboratory) in all the five national reviews of state key laboratories and was granted the title of "Advanced Group" and awarded the "Golden Award".

The Laboratory holds a long-standing research culture of "Dare to be the first, Focus on the detail, Encourage the collaboration”, making significant achievements in the fields of surface and interface chemistry, leading researches in catalytic conversion of C1 molecules, electrochemical energy conversion and storage, advanced spectroscopy and imaging methods, chemistry of atomic and molecular clusters, and theory on electronic structures.

Targeting at the national goal of "carbon neutrality" and a prior need of energy security, the laboratory focuses on the clean, low carbon, safe, and efficient energy system, solving fundamental scientific problems in large-scale energy storage, efficient and clean use of carbon-based energy, carbon dioxide capture and recycling.

At the present, the Laboratory consists of 114 permanent faculty members including 96 senior researchers (among them five are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, twenty-six are awardees of the Distinguished Young Scholar’s Fund of National Natural Science Foundation of China), 13 staff technicians, and 5 management personnel. The current director is Academician Su-Yuan Xie, while the deputy directors are Bin Ren, Qingyu Lin, Gang Fu, and Xu Hou. (The data Updated in Apr. 28, 2024)
