Abstract
First I discuss the rational design of supramolecular coordination systems self-assembled on surfaces. Then I present our studies of on-surface Ullmann coupling reaction, focusing on the catalytic activity of Pd and Cu. I also demonstrate how to use metal-directed template to control the on-surface coupling reaction. Taking advantage of efficient topochemical enhancement, macromolecular porphyrin structures that exhibit a narrow size distribution were synthesized on a surface. We applied scanning tunneling microscopy in these studies to unravel the single-molecule level characteristics. We also explored the potential functionalities of the low-dimensional coordination systems, for instance, novel magnetic and catalytic properties of the periodically organized iron atoms or atom-pairs embedded in the metal-organic architectures.
