Title: Multicomponent Approaches to Organic Synthesis and Chemical Biology

Abstract:
 
Research in the Shaw group focusses on developing new synthesis methods and the construction of complex small molecules to answer questions in biology with a particular emphasis on understanding the inhibition bacterial pathways that might lead to the development of new antibiotics. First, the catalytic reactions of new metal carbenoids has lead to efficient syntheses of plant-derived defensive compounds. Second, the synthesis of complex nitrogen heterocycles by multicomponent reactions (MCRs) and by newly-devised catalytic methods will be described.
 
Bio:
 
Jared Shaw received his B.S. from UC Berkeley (1993) and his Ph.D. from UC Irvine (1999) with Professor Keith Woerpel. He was an NIH postdoctoral fellow with David Evans at Harvard University (1999-2002) and an institute fellow at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT (2002-2007) before joining the faculty at UC Davis. Prof. Shaw’s research interests include multicomponent reactions, natural product synthesis, and chemical biology.
